REREC SUCCESS STORIES

Solar-Mini Grid Projects

Solar-Mini Grid Projects

Twenty-six solar mini-grid projects were implemented to power towns in the off-grid counties of Wajir, Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera and Garissa.

All of these Minigrids have been commissioned, and customers connected to power. Each solar mini-grid has a diesel generator backup and each station has the capacity to connect 150 customers (homesteads, schools, dispensaries and shops).

Electrification of public primary schools

Electrification of public primary schools

A total of 22,927 primary schools have been electrified across the country and the project has been a key contributor to the universal access target and improvement of education standards.

50 MW Garissa solar power plant

50 MW Garissa solar power plant

This is the largest solar power plant in East & Central Africa and is a national initiative aimed at promoting the use of renewable energy. The project involved implementation of a 50MW solar power generation plant in Garissa for connection to the National grid.

The project has been commissioned and is generating power to the National Grid. Currently the plant is contributing 2% of energy mix in Kenya.

Lighting up informal settlements

Lighting up informal settlements

REREC in partnership with other stakeholders was involved in upgrading of the informal settlements across the country.

The Corporation was involved in the installation of high mast flood lights to provide security lights in the informal settlements. Between financial years 2014/15 and 2015/16, the Corporation installed 104 No. High Mast Flood Lights in Kibera, Mathare, Korogocho, Ngomongo, Mukuru kwa Njenga in Nairobi and Kiandutu in Thika.

Turkwel-Lokichar line

Turkwel-Lokichar line

This project was implemented to extend grid supply to off-grid areas in Northern Kenya. The project involved the construction of a 120KM of 66kV Turkwell - Lokichar Line and installation of a 23MVA 66/33KV substation in Lokichar and 10MVA 66/33kV substation at Kalimungorok.

Hybrid Systems

Hybrid Systems

Hybridizing of four diesel power stations with solar was undertaken in Takaba, Eldas, Rhamu and Laisamis to make them more sustainable by reducing the operational costs.

Electrification of Public Facilities

Electrification of public facilities and households located within a radius of 600 meters from an existing transformer were prioritized during this period. In addition, new transformer installation on existing grid networks for households’ electricity connection were undertaken.

Promotion and Development of Other Renewable Energy Technologies

REREC completed six pilot projects in wind, biogas, solar and mini hydros shown on the table below. The two mini-hydros are community-based projects where REREC provided financial and technical support to enhance their operations.
